Kenda solved the case, and after all of his hard work, he was formally assigned to the Homicide Unit.
He remained in homicide for three years until being promoted to Sergeant in 1980. In 1984, he returned to homicide.
Kenda investigated the murder of Dianne Elaine Hood, a 32-year-old mother of three, in 1990.
According to Kenda, the case “matched the requirement for a Hollywood narrative” and garnered widespread media coverage, including a People magazine cover story and multiple books.
By the end of his career, Kenda stated that he became obsessed with his work.
Even his wife used to tell him every time not to indulge that much otherwise he is going to get killed in the process.
In 1996, Kenda retired as a detective and went on to give interviews about it.

Denver TV series editor Bryant had interviewed Kenda for a TV show about the local drug trade, which was linked to an increase in homicides.
Bryant approached Kenda in 2009 about creating a TV show based on his experience as a murder investigator.
Kenda finally reached an arrangement with Bryant to continue developing the series.
Bryant and Kenda prepared a 5-minute sizzle trailer, which was shown to FOX21 Studios in Los Angeles, who sold the series to numerous TV networks.
Investigation Discovery bought it in 2010 and began production in February 2011.
For the rest of the series, he worked without a screenplay. Homicide Hunter: Lt Joe Kenda was the title of the show.
The new series, American Detective with Lt. Joe Kenda, was announced in December 2020, with each episode having Kenda addressing the cases of various murder detectives in the United States.
